okay guys really how feasable is it for me to regear the axles under my blazer myself?, the axles are d44 front and 14 bolt 10.5 rear, my dad is pretty much a one man factory/fab shop, my uncle is a big rig mechanic and im semi competent, are there any special tools required for regeariing my axles that a general mechanics tool box wouldn't have and what other tecnicalities are there with regaering these axles, by the way im runnin open up front with 4:88 and limited slip rear with 4:88s, the rear limited slip is still undecided on which one to get? any suggestions  alos where have you guys found the gears to be priced best at, 4wheel parts is too expensive and randys ring and pinion seems alright anywhere else to look for gears and limited slip?

A gear change is not simply taking one gear out and putting another one in as bearing preload and gear contact mesh patterns have to be considered and adjusted as needed. It is not rocket science to do it but it does require patience as you may have to take it back apart a few times during install until you get tooth contact correct with shim adjustment. (this is important) But, if you are good with tools and know how you use them and follow axle setup instructions/specs, a gear change is quite possible to do in the "garage". Also, for what it is worth, the 14 bolt FF is one of the "easiest" HD axle to set up in that the pinion is in a removable cage that bolts into front of diff housing. This means that when you change pinion/ring gear, you change pinion is cage and set bearing preload for it and then adjust the depth of pinion (to tweak tooth contact pattern) via shims between cage and housing rather than removing carrier, (need to remove pinion on non 14 FF axles) removing pinion, removing bearings from it, changing shims next to pinion head, reinstall bearing on it then install in housing, resetting pinion bearing preload THEN checking contact pattern. While you will basically have to do this with D44, it is on a smaller scale than doing this with  D60 or D70. Did I muddy the water enough for you?

heh yeah thats pretty muddy, thats what i was worringing about, preloads, and contact mesh and etc... because ive heard people say its doable and others say it should only be attempted by a pro, and seeing as to niether i or my dad have expereice setting preloads and cheching gear contact and stuff im gonna look to have it done.  read more money!

Richmond Gear put out a DVD step by step install how-to thing. I haven't personally watched it but a friend of mine bought it from Summit Racing and said it was very very educational....rated G for the whole family!

Yukon, Summit Racing Equipment, Jeg's, etc. You just have to price shop. Either way, if you pay someone to do the work I would ask if you could observe. That could be very helpful if you decide to do it again someday.

Changing gears is not hard with patience and proper tools. If you know how to use tools and can follow instructions and take time to set it up correctly, it is quite doable.
