I bought a 2007 F150 Super Crew 4x4 with a 5.4 liter auto tranny just after last christmas. Here recently I decided to check the MPGs, I went 461 miles on 23.2 gallons. After doing the math, that's 20 MPG. I checked it again and sure enough, 20 MPG. I live in the Poconos Mtns. here in PA, up and down hills and mountains everywhere I go. That sounds crazy I know, but my question is, does anyone else get this good mileage?

My DD is an 07 F150 SCREW FX4 with the 5.4 and I average 16 commuting with it... wish I could get 20... that would killer...  

Not in a ford...my brother has an '03 GMC Sierra 4x w/5.3 v8 that averages 19 mpg and my inlaw has an 05 chevy crew 1/2 4x w/5.3 and averages 19.8...My brothers buddy has an '03 ford w/5.4 and can only muster 13mpg and needed to go to california to pick up a Harley the other week and couldnt afford to take it so he took my brothers sierra to go pick it up and he still ave 19 from MT. to Cal and back, so now he has his ford up for sale and gonna buy a GM.  

Yea, I don't believe that either... I've been driving our 07 Avalanche with the 5.3 with the cylinder deactivation thingy and I've only been able to average 14 with it... best I ever saw was 17 on a trip up the 5 to NorCal, flat and straight.  

Just got back from a 3000 mile trip to Oklahoma and back. Gettin from 19.4 to 20.2 MPGs on the highway and I'll stand by it. All stock. No exhaust, intake, chip, or nothing.

I serious question it too unless you are hyper-mileing and drafting behind semi's. That truck is heavy and that 5.4 is not that efficient. To get 20 you would need to get cruising drag HP requirements down to about 30 to 35 HP tops. I once meet a guy that claimed unusually high MPG on a GM truck. It turned out his speedo/odometer was off a good bit.  

I figure it depends more on driving habits around town and on the hwy than what it is.

are ya run a pace slower thatn most, keep up with the flow, or do ya think ya have to be up front no matter what? is everybody trying ot race you at every light or do you care? do ya blend at the end of a ramp or make someone move?

I've got a 98 k2500 burb with a 6.5td that gets 18-20 unless ya get excited and start pushing on the loud pedal. o' yeah and my spedo is slow cause of the 265's instead of the stock 245x75-16's

How are you getting these numbers? Off of the info center or  are you computing them yourself? If you're doing it your self what are the numbers from your trip? What was your average speed for the trip?

I would be a little more receptive to the idea if I didn't have the exact same truck and have averaged, figured on paper and I can pull the exact numbers/date for you, just over 17 on a trip with cruise set at 70mph, below 2000 rpm, for almost 300 miles of flat desert. I tried all I could to get high MPG numbers, and that is the best it would do. Truck is bone stock.  

I did all my figuring with calculator, sometimes twice to make sure. I don't speed at all, cause at $4.15 a gallon that is just stupid. I set the cruise at 5 below the limit just so I know that everyone is passing me and I don't have to touch the brake. On accelleration, I take it easy. When I know I will be stopping soon, I'll tap the brake and coast till about 20-30 MPH then brake to stop. I never open it up unless I absolutely have to. Just smart driving, that's it. I have a hotrod in the garage, no need the torture to truck.

i live in tunkhannock pa, i have an 01 expedition with the 4.6, everyplace i look it says average mpg should be around 11-12 mpg and i'm getting 15.5 to 16.2, so yea why couldn't he get 20 with his truck, he's not the first one i've heard that from, just take it easy on the skinny pedal, and you may be surprised

Ok, I'm willing to test this out. Still don't fully believe it (only because I own the exact same truck). I'm going to be making a few hundred mile drive this weekend from Los Angeles CA to Chula Vista CA, about 115 miles each way of flat interstate. I'll leave early and set my cruise at 60. If I don't get killed for driving so slow I'll report back with my findings. This whole 20mpg out of a 5.4 has me intrigued...  

Sounds high to me, but he also decribes VERY conservative driving. If it's stock, that would help also. I get 10-12MPG out of the 408 stroker powered Dodge. 8MPg from the 383 powered Wrangler (which has 5.13 gears and no OD...), 20-21 from the blown-383 powered TA (assuming I keep my foot out of it...) and 35MPG from the Lancer. I'd dearly love to get 20MPG from either 4x4....  

Questions: Is there a Taunue shell on the truck? Did the manufacturer stuff higher gears in axle by mistake? Most important, how's your driving habits?  

I could buy 16 to maybe 18 but not 20 unless you were driving 55 and drafting behind trucks as there is a lot of mass and drag there. Taller gears are not going to help because they do not change the HP requirements to move vehicle down the road and with most gas motor today which are designed for impressive HP ratings at higher RPM's the efficiency drops off as RPM decreases further under load. The further you are below you torque peak RPM the less energy is converted to work.
