Okay my truck: 78 k5 blazer 400ci v8, 700r4, np 208, d44, 14 bolt ff, the problem: Starter is acting up AGAIN!!!, i put a new starter and flwheel in back in october of 07, had starter problem, shimmied it, it worked for awhile but it started schrreching again so i shimmed it and it worked and then started schcreeching and the cycle has continued until now and i am tired of it!!!! about 2 weeks ago i had shimmed the starter to the point that the motor started just right, the noise comming from starter sounded like normal starter noise and the motor started without much cranking i was so happy but this only lasted like a week and it started screecing again and it wont even start motor anymore!!! what the heck is going on, how can it work for a short period of time and then not work a week lator??!!! what do i do, someone told me using a startor from a late model chevy small block would solve problem but i don't think so? anyone else heard this or solved this problem before??!! help

is the bracket still in use that goes on the end ot the starter motor and bolts to the block?, it helps keep it from moving, also be sure ya have starter bolts not just plain ol' 3/8" bolts with/without washers.

no i don't see the bracket ur talking about but guess what i got so tired that i soaked the starter in gas and blew it up, no really that what i felt like doing but i took it in for a core for my new starter, and guess what the new starter took no shims at all and the motor finally starts like it supposed to i guess the old starter was just haunted

where did u end up getting the starter? im having the same problem on the same year blazer, i have shimed it many different ways and have gotten 2 different starters and they both only lasted about 4 days, it also seems like it gets worse when the truck has been running for a while i dont know if i need a heat shield

the shims are needed for those that make a high pitched whine and or grind the flexplate/flywheel, there's a couple different gear pitches also which heat doesn't effect.
