I need some help. I have a 96 Jimmy in awesome shape! The only flaw is it needs a new tranny. Now i'm trying to find one and I've come across a few but I'm new with the whole tranny part of it. Will any 4L60E fit? There's this one that was from a car... but my jimmy's 4x4 so I'm rather confused here. If I could get some help that would be great as I really want to get it on the road.
Thanks.

they are all essentially the same tranny but i am not sure if the 4L60E has a removable tail (where it mates with the transfercase). a car trans would have full tail. you should call a reputable tranny shop and ask before you buy one from a car. they also used that trans in fullsize trucks and suv's. are you doing the job yourself or supplying the parts to a shop?

Actually, you DO NOT want a car tranny tail shaft swap or not. 4x4 versions of that tranny have a much heavier case because it has to arrest/control the counter torque for Tcase in low range. A car tranny could bust housing which would make a very bad day.

Thank so much! So what about a 4L60E tranny from a two wheel drive 97 jimmy? Will they be good or do I really need that 4x4 for the extra durability???

Your really need a tranny out of a 4x4 because it has a thicker stronger case. The internals are the same so you could swap the guts but you need the 4x4 series case.

the only rwd gm tranies that have a cast/fixed tail is the th200 and 2004r. all of the 2004r's have a uni case bell housing that fit all the BOP's and chev bells as well as BOP only bellhousings. it's awesome for a car.. the gears are 2.75,1.57,1.0 and .67OD.

I run the 2004r in my 68 chevelle that runs high 12 second 1/4 mile passes

It does not have to d with whether the tail shaft is removable but it is the thickness of the entire casing. BTW, GM made a 4L30E starting in 93 that they may still be making and it had two possible ratio combos. 2.40,1.48,1.0,.72 or a 2.86,1.62,1.0,.72

i never knew about the thicker case for 4x's...learn somethin every day! thanks, professor snoman.

hey mudb8, i assume since yer runnin in the 12's ya got a liitle power in yer chevelle. will they(200R4) hold up to a big block or VERY stout pontiac 400? i just got a '75 poncho because my son doesn't like the '68 dart...to quote him, "it's gay"...? ain't no way he come from my loins.

The reason for the thicker case is that Tcase is bolted to it and a lot of counter torque is developed in low range (counter to output shaft torque) and tranny is the only thing restraining it from twisting right out of there. (Tcase is bolted to tranny that then cares counters torque to engine and then engine mounts and lastly the frame)

thats what I'm runin.. 427 bbc. I also ran the 200 in my 71 montecarlo powered by a wrecked 69 judge.
they have the same problems as the 700 with surviving, they need gears.

it does matter that that the tail shaft is integeral/ cast part of the case... you'll not be able to bolt on a t-case..

It does matter about tail shaft but the point is that you need a 4x4 tranny case because it is stronger. A 2wd tranny with a removable tail shaft housing is NOT a solution here. On a 2wd tranny, there is no real torque on tailshaft housing or rear of tranny case. With a Tcase bolted on there is a LOT of counter torque placed and rear of tranny case.
