If you do not want to use a custom offset wheel on rear axle, you need to change rear axle hub assembly.

My local chevy dealer is saying that only an 11 in rear end was used on the 03 1ton and that only 1 hub is availible for that rear end. If I use the hub off of a 10 inch rear end will I have to change the axles as well? The dealership is saying the 11 inch axles will be to long for the new hub. any one know about this. this cant be that hard. I know they made single wheel 1 ton trucks in 03.

GM used a AAM 11.5 with a DRW that year BUT they also used a AAM11.5 with SRW on 8.1's and Dmax's. (6.0's had a 10.5)

That I cannot say for sure without looking further. Some DRW hubs have a longer axle shaft "hub" projection for wheels to center on and if so have a longer axle shaft but I do not beleive this is the case with 11.5. GM uses as many common parts as possible to minimize inventory and cut costs. Gm switched to AAM 11.5 in 2001 over D70 and 10.5 in DRW apps so parts for 2001 to present are what yo are looking at.

Well here is what I have found so far.. I have called several different dealerships. They are showing only one axle and one axle hub for the 3500 is it possible that what I have will work as a single rear wheel?

It is possible that they handled it with wheel offset and front wheel hub offset. If so you need to change front hub to SRW style and use stock SRW wheels

okay here is the answer. to convert a 3500 chevy 1ton 4x4 from a DRW to a SRW you will have to change the outer hub and axle the DRW has a 1009mm axle and the SRW has a 902mm axle. Not what I wanted to hear but hey its only money right

I am not too surprised because the extra wheel/hub offset obviously requires a longer axle shaft so there is still a hub to center wheels on.

Myself I never cared for a DRW P/U or would own one because of wide tail end. If they had narrowed the box wheelwells in bed and tucked them under further, I might have got one. I could have dealt with narrower area between well better than wide butt. Even a cab and chassis DRW is narrower than a DRW P/U. It would have also been nice if they had adopted a single wider wheel and tire to rear axle that had increased load capacity and would have had a much narrower truck in rear with same load capacity. It would have used a bit less fuel too that a DRW. Around here BP uses single wide wheel/tire combos on their tanker truck fleet on tractors and trailers because it reduces fuel costs a bit for fleet and when a oil company does that it tells your something too.

the bed will be replaced with a standard 8 ft box. Got that already just need this dang axle chrisis solved. I was thinking is the axle housing the same on both the 902 and the 1009mm. Can just changing out the hub and axle work? Does anyone know where on the net I can actually look at the drawings and part numbers for this axle?

Housing should be the same. GM offers a 11,000 lb axle option in some 3500 cab and chassis setups that is DRW only but it also has 10 lug hubs too.
