Try cleaning IAC valve (Idle Air Control) as it adjusts idles speed in gear to prevent it from stalling. When a load is applied to engine by placing it in gear engine slows down and IAC adjust for it. In the old carb days you set idle speed manually in gear.

is it in the tbi itself? can I clean it while it is still on the truck? By the way snoman i just set my timing taking your advice of 8 BTDC and running 89 at the pump, and WOW what a diffrence that made! it feels like a new truck. havent driven it enough to see how much mileage has improved but all hesitation is gone! thank you so much for the advice.

I was not joking about the timing and fuel thing as you see as it can make quite a difference. The IAC mounts in TBI body and can be removed for it without removing TBI body itself. It is constantly "tweaked" by ECM to control idle speed.

Snoman you seem to be a pretty knowledgable guy i had that problem with my 94 Chevy K1500 (its more of my nice truck as appose to the GMC i was telling you about) i had that issue with her stalling on me when ever i put her in gear that was after i installed the little Performer Cam and intake and Jet performance chip i always knew it was a timing issue but was having a hard time finding the right spot i think when i get out of Iraq imma set it to 8 BTDC like you were saying thanx for sharing all that with us you helping me out alot

You have to be careful when you cam a TBI or MPI engine as they are not as forgiving as carbed engines. If you installed a more aggressive cam it likely increased overlap and reduced vacuum at idle and making idle control more difficult for IAC. Advancing timing will help here but you might also check for a vacuum leak too.

Give it a little time to see if it resets itself and if not if connections to it are good and there in no vacuum leaks, replace IAC.

snoman, doesn't he need to go through a drive cycle before it will reset?

It should (after drive cycle) as it is not likely going to reset idling there.

As Ive changed my IAC valve too on my 93 k1500 I had to Install then drive about 5-10 miles, on a backroad is best, and no faster than 35mph for the IAC to relearn its position and after Ive done that it went back to normal idle.

i really appreciate all your help, i droveto work and back (14miles) and it still stalled at the light, i did find a vacum line w/ some e tape on it so i pulled it off and there was a crack in it. its the dual line that goes from the t/b to the egr solinoid and also to the air injection valve (I think that is what it is lol) anyway i replaced that and it is a lot better but will still stall at a long light??? whats next i replaced the iac w/ one from my s-10 it was almost brand new looking so i went w/ that one... But where now???? LOL thank you guys again.
And Snoman Thanks again for the timing trick I swear it a new truck!!!

That timing/fuel trick is sweet for sure as I have known for years. On your stalling, at this stage, you might want to rig in a vacuum gauge i cab to monitor engine vacuum and see what it happening there during longer idles.

heres another thought...you might want to look at the TPS (throttle position sensor). My 97 lesabre kept stalling at drive thrus or lights going under 10mph but would always start and drive away.It should be on the drivers side of tbi.

Should be on passenger side on that vehicle.
