I used to work for a Ford dealership as a mechanic and during down time I would always talk to the old techs to learn anything I could. One old tech who had been with the company for some time told me an interesting story, and it may be just that, however it would be nice if it were true. He explained to me that in the late 80s or early 90s when Ford went straight to multiport fuel injection, they took the old carbureted engine from the year before, and fuel injected it. As his story unraveled he revealed that Ford recalled them that same year to "de-tune" the engines. Supposedly, the engines were to powerful for their own good, and were breaking motor mounts, and possibly even a few instances of twisting frames. It really is a great story and may be just a story, but started my thought processes. I have a 1979 F150 4x4 and ,at the time of hearing this story, had just finished putting a 460 in it. So is it possible to put the fuel injection intake on a 1979 block and DOVE heads? Or is it possible to put the whole fuel injection top end (heads and intake) on and old block?
Thanks, Ryan New Braunfels, TX

That is a really good "story". TO suggest the a low compression smog engine would be transformed into a power house with adding FI is foolish. My guess is that it had emissions and closed loop errors/problems because FI engine were cam'ed differently than carbed one to have less overlap and duration changes. In your case, I am not sure I would bother. I would just get a aftermarket intake manifold and good carb and go with it. MPG is not going to be good either way but a aftermarket intake and carb will warm it up more than FI will.

Ive heard the same story before.I was working at a dealership to from the same source from a guy that had been working at a dealership for a long time.I went into the computer at the dealership to try to find any part numbers that would interchange. Like pistons heads or anything.I found that pistons and the heads carried the same part numbers but nothing that said they were past year motors.Late 70s motors were low compression motors anyway.I hope this helps.
