I have a 91 chevy 4x4 w/ a 4.3 given to me recently. It runs good and theres not much rot to fix but it looks like the rear brakes had frozen at one time and whoever went and beat the riviots to the shoe pivot out of the backing plates instead of just busting the $50 drum. New backing plates from dealer are $275 each, ouch! I might have found another rearend at the local bone yard for $300 (have to check gears). Does anyone know if any other axle will bolt in ( earlier years or other makes ) ? thanks

GU6 is a 3.42 axle ratio which is pretty tall for a 4wd with OD. I you are looking for a axle in a bone yard, look for a GT4 which is a 3.73 or GT5 4.10. Granted you may have a GU6 now but if you are changing rear axle, change ratio too and then you will be half way there to regearing truck and making it run much better. You need a 88 to 99 axle and if you fund a 5 lug axle of that year from a 2wd, you can simply swap you 6 lug axles into it.
