I got a 1982 chevy scottsdale with 6.2 L diesel and 700r4 with the 208 transfer case. yesterday I put it reverse and it would not engage so I put it in nuetrel and rolled it a litte and tried reverse again and as soon as it engages a Loud gear grinding squeel happend. So I tried my drive gears and it does the same thing when I get to around 3 mph it starts to squeel also. Is this some thing typical when the tranny or TC go out or could it be a linkage problem ![]()
And on the 208 TC does it share the fluid with the tranny or does it hold its own supply?

You have a very early 700R4 if it has never been changed. It has gone through several revise between then and 1987. Early ones where trouble prone. Time to look for another tranny. You want one with a 30 spline input shaft (85 and later) Do not get another 27 spline unit like you have if it is stock. After 85 the tranny saw only one more "tweaking" till it was replaced. That was in 87 when the tweaked valve body design to improve shift quality a bit. Also they do not share fluids unless tranny to Tcase seal in bad. (they do both use ATF though)

As far as spline difference, you need a new torque converter to match it. If is is modified, how? You do not want one with hard shifts or modified shift points. Lastly, if the tranny does not have a cast bolt on lower torque converter shield, it is not a HD case and you do not want it. (you do not want one with a stamped metal cover)

It will fit but you might have to tweak it.

the newer 700s are very strong for stock units. the 700 in my last truck (90 k1500 silverado) had 316K miles before hte original tranny gave out on me. the truck was lifted, but geared propperly (33s and 4.10s)
