It's a sad day in Four Wheeler land. On May 1st the EPA together with the BLM officially closed Clear Creek OHV area for good due to the potential risk of Cancer due to "unsafe" levels of Asbestos.
You can do anything you dare to dream.

It is a sad loss, and another OHV gone now.
It has been years since I have been there but I do remember that place well...
We used to only wheel there when it was muddy so the asbestos was not in the air and dust as we drove.
Here is one of the video's from our last trip there:

If you check out the video I posted, you will see some of the old mines and there is an old mining town there too.
I am pretty sure that is where they mined asbestos back in the day when they did not know. The site for clear creek used to have some pretty good info but it is not up anymore or I would have posted it.

Well, at least they didn't shut it down for the benefit of some tree frog.
As mentioned, the "problem" here was indeed high levels of asbestos in the dust being kicked up by vehicles. Which in turn is a byproduct of the six-year drought we've had out here in the West. A couple of wet winters, and this problem would likely "solve itself," though heaven knows how long it would take EPA to initiate another study of the area.
For what it's worth, you can see their report on Clear Creek here .

Ah I found it, here is the info I was looking for earlier. The site for Clear Creek management area has been changed so you cant find the specific info of the naturally occuring asbestos in the area. It is a pretty sweet area to check out and fun in the mud but not worth the trip when it is dry up there.
"The Clear Creek Management Area (CCMA) in San Benito and Fresno Counties is located on one of the largest naturally occurring asbestos deposits in the world. The rugged terrain overlaying this 31,000-acre serpentine deposit is a popular and challenging riding spot for off-road motorcyclists. The naturally barren slopes, bald ridges, chaparral and rare plants are also enjoyed by rock collectors, botanists, hikers, hunters and campers, including families with children. Thousands of visitors each year use hundreds of miles of criss-crossing routes, a legacy of historic mining activities in the area."
