Hi everybody. i need some help with my project truck. i have a 1971 Chevy c10 custom step side that i am fixing up for my self. I'm seventeen years old and i love mudding. where i live four wheel drive is a must if you want to have any fun. haha So naturaly my problem has to be with the four wheel drive. Anyways my problem is this: i bought a new frame (year it was made is unknown) for my truck and the front differential is on the passenger side, i bought a 1988 350 engine with a THM400 trany w/transfer case but once i put the new drive traine in it i realized the front four wheel drive output shaft is on the drivers side? they don't line up. the original transfer case that came with the frame was what i made out to be a NP203 which doesn't bolt up to my THM400? just wondering if any of you guys have any quick fixes to my problem? or any low cost solutions like a conversion kit? or if i do have to buy a new one, what would fit my thm400 and have an output shaft on the passenger side? i guess what I'm asking you is if you were in my position with an extremely low budget, what would you do?
Thank you so much for your time and any help or information you could give me would be greatly appriciated!!!
Thanks again,
Suich

Yes, trash the THM 400 and Tcase. THe THM is old news and greatly outdated. GEt a 700R4 and a NP208 and they will mate and output will be on correct side. 700R4 does not need a computer and the real beauty of one is that you can run some serious gears in axles for power and yet cruise nicely in OD (example, a 700R4 with a 5.13 will cruise at a lower RPM than a THM400 and a 3.73 and have gobs more power in lowers gears too) Fuel is too expensive and the ratio range on a 700R4 (4.33 to one for highest to lowest gear) vs a THM 400 (2.48 to 1) is too good to pass up too.

also a 208 t-case or a 241 right side drop off of a th400 will bolt directly on what you already have, the th400 did come factor w/ the 203 so you can also simply get an adaptor and input/adaptor for the 203.

GM used the THM350 with 203. GM even used THM350 with 400SB. GM did not start using THM400 is HD 4x4 until after THM350 was phased out and replaced by 700R4. Still would not use 400 though as it is old and not fuel friendly either. Many think they need a THM400 when all they really need is a proper set of gears. Sad part is that you are also giving up the much deeper first gear of a 700R4 as well as OD.

the 203 was also used with the th400 factory...along with the 203, 205, 208...all are much cheaper than a swapping to a 700, which I agree is a better option, although the 400 has a unbeatable track record compared to the 700 in both abusive situations and correctly geared.

I question the cheaper part. 700R4 are easy to come by. The 700R4 is not a weak tranny and with a little work it can far exceed the capacity of a stock THM400. The main reason people toast 700R4's is because they do not PROPERLY regear them. The 700R4 has a very tall OD for a automatic. Because of this when they try to run then it normal OD position on shifter. This results in tranny running on stall a lot and slow baking tranny until it fails. If they at least ran them in "3" instead and lock out OD. If you use properly ratios, a 700R4 is a very sturdy tranny. I have 185K mile on one in my 89 4x4 burb that I bought new and it still works flawlessly and it has not had a easy life but it has had a small aux cooler on it since new and fluid and filter changes every 2 years or so too. It has stock size tires on it and if I were to install bigger tires on it tomorrow. The first thing I would do would be to install deeper gears too. BTW, it is cheaper to install a 700R4 because even with deeper gears, between its locking converter and OD you will likely see at least 15 to 20% better MPG which is a big factor today and run cooler of road because between deeper axle gears and deeper tranny gears, it will ride stall less and waste less fuel to converter slippage and heat.
