The one that is lockedup the guy wants $350 for it & the other guy wants $500 for the one that smokes. I've seen that a good running bbc go for $900. If I pay that I like to git the truck or car with it.

i wouldnt pay $50 for the one thats locked up! theres no tellin what wrong w/it...probably internals are near the breaking point. and the one that smokes, does it smole all the time or just on start up? cause if its on start up the vlv stem seals are prob bad, and if all the time then the rings might be bad.id offer 300 cash.

I think what BB it is plays a big roll in its value too as a pre 73 ones, though it would need to have hardened valves installed, would have better flowing heads and higher compression and no native smog controls to speak of and would have a higher value. Also a 396 BB would be worth more because they are a lot harder to find and 427's even rarer yet. Though some favor the 454, I am fond of the 396/402 more. I owned a non smog 396 over 30 years ago and drove it for several years and it was a sweet motor.

If one of the rats is a 396/402,and the crank is usable, then put it in the 454,IF its a 454,then you can make a 427.@4.25 bore and 3.76 stroke.a NEET O combiation? at least it sounds cool, sooo if you can find out what size they are, maybe pull the pan, AND, if your lucky, you'll find four bolt mains! good luck to ya!

The shorter stroked BB's (396,402 and 427) had better rod/piston thrust angles and made better power at higher RPMs and wound up a bit more safely with stock parts too.

What do you guys about a 427 talldeck? The # are 473478. The # 361959 are off the one that's locked up. I can't get the # off the one that runs. It is in a 80's model truck,& it looks like it gots the smog stuff on it.

If it is a tall block it can be a 427 or 454 HD truck engine (not from P/U's) The block is taller so they can use a longer connecting rod to reduce piston thrush side loads in severe duty for longer engine life and better lower RPM torque.

the # 473478 is a 427 tall deck yr range 68-84 and the # 361959 is a 454 yr range 73-85 and came in a car or truck according to my chevy engine # guide.

The "nice" thing about a tall block is that they were all used in HD trucks and had hardened valves and seats long before unleaded fuels required hardened valves and seats in car and SUV motors (it started in 73)
