im trying to find  5 speed trans for my truck,  and i found a good deal on a NV3500 tranny out of a 89 chevy 1500.  for about 200 bucks,  look at it,  slight surface rust,  gears are clean and in good shape,  shifts fine...

only problem is the trans is from a 2wd truck.

so would it be possible to use my existing transfer case (NP203 or 205,  can remember which) with the new transmission?  and still keep my truck 4wd?

thanks...

What truck are you trying to put it into because a 3500 has no granny gear and is not a good choice for a big 4x4.

try and find a 93 model yr chevy or gmc pup (W/T 1500) 4X4 THEY COME W/5SPD TRANNY W/GRANNY GEAR. the one in my 93 k1500 has over 160K miles on it and i never had a problem w/it.just had to replace the clutch, and all the gears hold true and dont pop out of gear, and you can probably pick one up for fairly cheap, not as cheap as a 2wd tranny but still fairly cheap.

They had no granny gear (3500 never did) The 4500 had a true granny gear but was never in a 1/2 ton truck. GM 1/2 ton trucks have not had a granny gear since they stopped using SM465's in them as a option. At link below you will find a list of GM tranny gear ratios that I complied

well sno...sorry to say BUT you are wrong, I ran my vin # w/chevy dealer and my option code is MT8/MW3 or commonly known as the NV4500 w/6.34-3.04-1.67-1-.75-rev 5.61,and as i recall chevy put these trannys in W/T1500 work trucks well for work. the option code MT8 is on my tag in the glove box...so neo-ice look for MT8/or MW3 and you will have a stout trans

You have a VERY rare bird if it had a 4500 because I have never seen one ever. All the WT truck I ever saw new and used had 3500 with a 4.02 first gear.  Also, you do not "need" to shift at 7 MPH because even if you had a early 4500 with a 6.32 gear and 4.10 gear ratio with stock tires it would not redline (5500RPM) until about 20 MPH and would only be doing about 2000 RPM at 7MPH. Your are not being straight with the facts here.

sorry but the thing didnt come w/a tach so i judge by what i hear ao i cant tell you what rpm i have in low, i just know that the engine screams before i shift it out of low thats why i start out in 1st...the fact is i never said what rpm it was doing just mph, my truck came w/373 gears and i cant tell you stock tire size, i assume it was 245/75/16 but it has on now 265/75/16.so until i get a tach on it i go by what i hear, and so far my hearing aint to bad. and one more thing i can tell you that in low or granny it wont reach 20mph or i wont let it.

The noise is misleading, it will get there. It is only turning about 2000 at 7MPH and even with 6.14's in axles it would only be doing 3000. BTW, I drove a rare Dmax 6 speed manual yesterday and it would do about 14 MPH in granny with its 3200 RPM cutoff.

Does ORU or Off road unlimited have a 4500 to 205 adapter kit?

I am sure the Advanced Adapter would. Also NV4500.com has them
