i think i found a dana 60 for my 79 3/4ton chevy...woundering what needs to be done to bolt into the front. looks like i will be replacing the brakes and rotors, got the spring plates..what universal joint will i need for the yoke? are the 3/4 ton ujoints the same size as a 1ton? im also thinking about not connecting the sway bar to the front..anythoughts

I see no issue with yoke/ujoints and as far as stabilizer bar, I have long discarded them for off road usage and it improves ride a bit and helps articulation as well so I would not think twice about leaving it off.

i agree with snoman. my only question is this, are the springs spaced the same on 3/4 ton and 1 ton front axles?

They should be. The only difference in frame back then was minimal (a bit heavier) and not spacing related.

It should be the same. The only real difference I have seen between 3/4 and 1 ton chassis of that era is that the top and bottom or "hats" on "C" channel in rear are wider. I believe that when GM came out with the CP6 chassis option for 3/4 tons that this was basically the 1 ton frame being used.

well swapping a 44 to a 60 is cake. me aand my pops just did it and the only issue we ran into is that the break lines are slightly to short because on a 60 the end of the line going to the caliper has a l shape to it.

well i got the axle home and put it on a set of jack stands..time to go through it or at least what i can do..don't think i will be tackling the carrier or new gears, but plan on puting some new locking hubs, rotors and calibers...by the way i HATE SALT!! it is amazing what that stuff will do to a 1990 dana 60..my girlfriend's quote was "you paid how much for that pile of rust?" lol..im sure i will come up with questions along the way (just to warn you)...any good sites to referance off of??   thanks

ok i just got the outer spindle nut off (after i went to town to get the correct spindle socket) the previous owner used the hammer and chisle to get them off..now it looks like i have to buy at least 2 new ones..how do i get the hub and rotor off? thanks

I Belive there are two nuts the are seperated by a washer and you have to remove both of them in order for the rotor to come off. Unless it is from a dodge front end and in the case you have to line up a hole on the rotor and remove 6 bolts one by one.

well finally found the clip to remove the caliper under all the rust..then got the BFH to persuade the hub/rotor off..also took off the caliper bracket, my question is since im dealing with all this rust should i reinstall these parts after i clean them..or should i be concerned with the loss of all this metal and maybe replace the pieces? also what is the easiest way to get the rotor off the hub?  take it to a press shop or just hammer away?....i'll be honest with you this is my first time tackling a project like this by myself and i find myself second guessing..alot...my plan is to tear down the axle, us a grinder w/wire brush, zinc primer, and put on a coat or 2 of good under coating stuff ( not the spray can but thick brush on kind)...any tips from anyone that has done this before is encouraged...thanks again
