I recently picked up a 78 Scout II Traveler.  Dana 44's front and back, but I don't know what kind of transfer case.  Any way to tell?

The scout only used three Tcases that I know of. A dana 18 thru 68 and a Dana 20 after that through 79 and the dana 300 in 1980.

Is the Dana 20 a decent Tcase?

Yes, it is sturdy. The only "bad" thing about it is that low range is only 2.03 to 1. Personally, I do not consider it a issue if axles are geared correctly.
