Got a '64 1 ton chevy in great shape. Has 350 with 420 manual tranny rear axle don't know the gears would like to see if it would be worth the time to turn this into a 4 wheel drive. I have a 1 ton front axle, would like to see if an old Dodge Power Wagon diverse transfer case would work good and strong if in right. Any suggestions and thoughts are welcome.

So somebody swapped in a 350 V-8 ?   It will be up to you if it is worth it.  Do some looking for a divorced mount Dodge transfer case.  After you find one plan the swap and start the project.  Good luck.

One tons back then came with 5.14 gears (yes 5.14 not 5.13) in a Eaton/Rockwell 12 inch rear axle. As suggested above, they used a divorced Tcase setup too. If I was going to do this conversion I would look around for a closed knuckle front axle too that was all used up to about 1969. One more thing, it may not have a 350 unless someone swapped it in because they offered a 283 and 327 then.

Should be a Spicer/Dana 60 with closed knuckles. It would have to be a 5.13 which is close enough to 5.14 and not a problem. The HO72 rear axle GM used then had 4.57 gearing in 3/4 tons and 5.14 in one tons. The 4.57/5.14 ratio are unique to the Eaton axle. They used a 7/32 gear combo on 4.57 and 7/36 for 5.14. The teeth were massive and rear end is arguably the strongest rear axle ever placed in a P/U to this day. It had a removable pig/carrier assembly and a adjustable ring gear thrust pad to prevent ring ring flex under extreme startup loads. (you only generally see that stuff in some MD and HD truck drive axles with load capacities or 6 ton and more today) They could not afford to build a axle like that today for a P/U.

The 1 ton front axle is off of a 84 GMC, if I can I like to keep it old looking. I got the #'s off the engine my books don't go back that far 19J298088-VO7O7F3, can you help? thanks.       The guy I got the truck from said the engine is a 350.

What is the casting number on block behind cylinder head by bell housings on drivers side. It can narrow down series and age of engine. 283's, 307's, 327's and 350's all look the same as they share same block and head design. On the front axle, if you want that really cool old factory look for that truck (I would) you need to hunt up a closed knuckle front axle from a 69 or earlier truck.

If I were you Id keep the 84 frt axle under it, parts are available at pretty much every parts house and you wont have to spend every wakin minute trying to find parts for a 60s model yr axle, I think all you can get is tie rod ends for the 60s axle...you want to enjoy you cool 64 chevy and not harbor bad feelings toword it cause you cant find parts...also ive found that a couple chevy dealers still have old parts books that have the #s your looking for, for the 350...also look on the shelf on the pass side head (frt under valve cover is a stamped # not cast) and they can tell you hp and what it origanally came out of.
and good job finding the 64 4x4...have fun w/it

The 64 is a good idea, I'm thinking of a different truck to build. I found a rearend, its a crew cab dually, that looks like a dana 70.  it has 4 56 gears that were put in it. like to find out more info. about good/bad qualities. Also would like to know what kind of splines the axle shafts have.
