In the latest issue i recived you guys talked about the new 2009 Dodge Ram. You guys said that the new Ram is the first pick-up ever to have a coil spring rear. This is incorrect! Chevrolet used a coil spring rear in the C-10's from 1967 to 1972. My grandpa owned a 69' and added a 2nd set of coils to the rear to support his slide in camper. Popular Mecanicics also said the same thing about the Ram. If Dodge provided the info they need to do more research. Thanx Chevnut

Great job on keeping up with the facts. I can't stand it when the manufactures distort the facts to make their vehicles sound like the best. Just be honest and tell it how it is, how hard is that.

Actually, GM P/U's had coil springs in rear of 2wd P/U's well before 67. It started around 1960. Never ws on a 4x4 model though. I had a 66 3/4 ton 2wd and it had coil with three 1/2 inch thick booster leafs on each side that rested on axle pad when suspension sank a few inches. They were like half leaf cut in half with the other end bolted to frame about 2 feet behind rear axle with a 1 inch bolt in a massive bracket. I had about 2 1/2 tons in it once and it did not phase it much. That much weight would kill a modern 2500HD and have it dragging its tail too.

Petersons 4 wheel and Offroad did a story a number of years ago of a guy who built a 72 C-10 into a 4x4 with parts from a vintage Ford Bronco for the front end. He used Dana 44 with the coils and bottom coil brackets from the Bronco. I guess it worked very well for him.

It would be impossible to use a stock GM type coil spring of the 1966 to 72 era on a 4x4 because drive shaft passes through a hole in a girdle brace between frame rails that control arms attach too and it is in wrong place for 4x4 drive shaft locating.

Thanks for the info, we do our best to be accurate, but there is always an exception.
