Gotmike: You should send this one into me for the Reade's Rigs section. I would run it. Better yet send some shots of it in action.

i'd love to... but i'd have to ask his permission... he's built it all himself... when it still had the ifs front he re-machined a dana 35 locker to make it fit... it was pretty awesome... especially with the 28" TSL's... I'll see what he says about pic's though... he's had like 3 or 4 of these things...  they're awesome on and off-road...

I owned two Subarus. I bought a 81 and 86 GL 4x4 wagon(s) new (86 replaced 81) I drove them until late 89 when my "family" out grew them because they were too small. They were good solid cars stock but I would never lift one and install bigger tires as the power loss would make it pretty lame and there is really no after market gearing to correct this nor would drive axles like bit tires long if they could be properly regeared. I put on well over 100K miles on them combined.

You can do a engine swap and once you lift it 6 inches most guys put in a transfercas from a ford ranger or nissan to help increase the gear for final drive and low range there are guys on the site that drive around on 30 to 33 to 35 inch tires because of these mods. so there are mods you can do. also a lincoln locker for the rear or limited slip is an option and upgrades to the brakes and bolt pattern for toyota trucks are offered for a better rim selection

They don't tend to be rock crawlers, but do well on "difficult" trails.
Here's a few and what we do with them.

In 03, we took a group of 3 of them thru part of the Rubicon.  There are pics out there somewhere, I shot the vid.

Here's the one I have now.  Built it 5 years ago, sold it, flew down to Idaho and bought it/drove it back to Seattle last June.

Here it is next to my 85 efi Toy just after I got it back.

Part of the reason we do what we do is because there is no after market, you'll find that most of us who lift and modify our subbies spend alot of time thinking outside the box in stead of going through a catolog and picking out shiny new parts. As for axles, all I have to say is "GCK". Don't knock it untill you try it. Here is a link to one of my albums, take a look around.......

Weber makes a kit to adapt the 32/36 carb.  It helps quite a bit.  5 speed swaps from the "newer" GLs help too.

Here's my '87 GL with an Ozified 4" lift running 29" swampers.

Fabbing a new front bumper as we speak.
These cars will surprise you with what they are able to get through.
