WHICH DIESEL ENGINE IS SUITABLE FOR MY 1980 CJ6. I DO CONSIDER FUEL ECONOMY, HIGH TORQUE AND EASY MOUNTING THAT FREE OF PROBLEMS.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLIES FRIENDS

Any diesel that is going to provide a big increase in torque and power is not going to be a easy fit plus it is going to weigh a lot more too. Jeep used to use a 4 cyl cummins in military full sized jeep during 70's. That would likely be best beat as easiest to do.

the gm6.5 diesel is a easy swap into the cj's, It uses the same mounts and bell as a sbc.

SBC = Small-Block Chevy V-8.

Do not forget that you will add about 400 to 500 lbs over stock engine in it now. This might sound crude but before you decide to go through with this swap, place about 400 lbs of sand bags on front end and see how it handles. You will be putting a big lead sinker up there but many never seem to consider the impact of weight to a off road vehicle. Old jeeps were known for being fairly light and nimble. That will no longer be true with a big hunk of iron in there. Also do not forget to beef up frame and swap out axles too. (even more weight)

BTW, old Chevy inline 6's and all V8's big and small from 60's through 99 have same bolt pattern. Dmax motor has it too as does 8.1. The 4.8/5.3/6.0 have a different pattern.

you should actually drive a cj with a 6.5td (like mine)before you go around yaking about all this nose heavy stuff...(890#)...that big lead sinker gets better mileage and has more torque than sbc's or 4 banger diesel, which weights more also and are huge slugs,
the frame won't need further support either unless your gonna be jumping it. the v-8 is also shorter and helps the distribution of the weight.
some of the IH scouts also had a inline 6cyl diesel.

I do not need to drive it. I like Jeep like vehicle light in weight without lead sinkers under hood. See I have issues with putting a 900 lb motor is a 3K vehicle or even a 1300 lb CTD in a 5000 lbs P/U chassis. I do not care what torque numbers are because 500 ft lbs at 1500 RPM is the same HP as 250 ft lbs at 3000 RPM. Nothing "magic" about it at all. It is all in gearing a engine properly to load which most 4 wheels rarely do. As far as MPG, yes you can get more but then diesel fuel here has been 25 to 30% more than gas all winter. I like my quiet gas motors that do not stink and I can start them instantly be it 60 above or 20 below without any waits or delays or extended warm ups. You can keep you lead sinker. When diesel was cheaper than gas and option was cheaper too it made some sense but today it does not and that swap will never pay for itself because it will never save enough fuel to pay for swap. If you want one fine but do not say you are going to save money because you are not when you factor all the costs. Same is true with new ones, in SUV's, when yu factor in a 6 or 7K option and added manitainance costs and fuel cost you will never save money. Many though seem to forget the total and extra costs and look only at MPG and figure they are saving.

I JUST READ OVER THE WEEKEND ABOUT 6.5L DIESEL SWAPS AND IS THE EASIEST TO DO IN ONE OF THE DIESEL MAGS I THINK IT WAS A MAR.OR APRIL '08 ISSUE AND THEY SAID THE COST OF THIS TYPE OF SWAP IS CHEAPER AND THE BEST WAY TO GO FOR LOW TORQUE AND MILAGE. BY FAR CHEAPER AND EASIER THAN FORD OR CUMMINS SWAPS AND IT SAID THE 6.5 WILL BOLT UP TO ANY GM BELL AND WILL FIT IN THE ENGINE BAY BECAUSE OF THE IDENTICLE SIZES OF 90DEGREE BLOCKS THAT PRETTY MUCH ALL GM ENGINES HAVE. I THINK THE WEIGHT MAY BE AROUND 2-300LBS HEAVIER THAN A 350 OR 360 OR 401 FOR THAT MATTER.
AND IT SAID THAT THE BEST PATIENTS FOR THE SWAPS ARE THE 60-70S CHEROKEE/WAGONEER-AND SEEIN HOW THE CJS CAME W/V8S IT WOULD WORK FOR THEM ALSO.
BEST DONOR RIGS WERE THE '84-98 GM 6.2/6.5 AND IF YOU DONT THAT MUCH ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS THEN GO W/THE OLDER 6.2 W/THE MECHANICAL INJ PUMPS, NOT MUCH PROBLEMS W/THEM.

exactly right stink eye!...82 and 83 6.2's had larger valve heads and course threaded injectors...the only diff

82-93 are all mechanical pumps aside from the electric shut off solenoid and fast idle.

Even the yuppie defender and landrover crowd are using the 6.2's and 6.5's in their high dollar vehicles because of the mileage, torque and dependability..

what was it again the military hummers are powered by? LOL

i dont know how plentiful the deere engine is but by the sounds of it you may have trouble getting parts, but if i were you i would try and find a donor gm 6.2 as parts are readily available and has less problems than elec. 6.5
now if there are plenty of parts avail, youd have to paint it jd greene and jd yellow! ha!
