hey 1980cj6...look at this article, if you havent already, its in the 4wheel site under project (UAJK 5.9 cummins) the do this swap and it in tails more work than a 62/6.5 swap but it can be done and the body length is about the same as your scrambler.read that and make your disission...as im sure your tired of us chasing our tails on this and im sure your not too worried about pollutants cause if you were you wouldnt inquire about such a swap...so happy swapping and take care...

the industry is looking into using a urea based catalist to cut the NOX emissions,this is under the horizon right now but it is coming.So diesles have a substantially brighter future than what some forcasters see.the coal fired industies are experimenting with it as a "scrubber" to cut emissions of the greenhouse gasses.So the future is looking brighter.happy wheeling!

Naughty, some times ya know!(insert evil villan rubbing hands here).I work in and round and gots the radar set. some other stuff... you can ask the class 8 motor mfgs,will give you another clue as to the use of a urea fired engines.real clean stuff.

mudb8-.: my old blazer will definately run away from the 6.5 burb but not while towing...and the fuel mileage drops to single digits when trying to keep up..they still don't have the diesel torque charged.
Well a diesel will have the edge is MPG, no argument there (other than fuel is 3.75/gal here now while gas is 2.93) but any edge is towing power of a 6,5 or a good 350 is skewed. Most gas 4x4 are poorly geared for towing even without lifts and tires. A gas motor needs to make a few revs to to its best and get into its torque peak range. I have towed some version heavy loads with 350 over the years in commercial, personal and farm applications and they have never let me down. Some towed loads exceeded 20,000 lbs. It is all in gearing engine to load that makes or breaks it. A modern 350 with stock tires and say a 4.56 with OD would surprise you what it would tow effectively and better too. You want a tires size axle ratio combo that will let it turn about 2800 RPM to 3000 RPM in drive with a 350 at 60 MPH or so and it will pull like a ox when needed (a Vortec 350 has about 190HP at flywheel at that RPM) and yet cruise nice in OD too. Basically every poor gas tow'er can be linked to engine/axle ratio combo. All HP are the same they just happen at different power curves and it is the "job" of proper gears to make it all happen. There was a time when a P/U truck was a truck and geared proper by default but today they are more focused on making them more car like than truck like.

I'm not saying you can't tow with a gas engine, the 350 @ 190 hasless torque than the 6.5td @205hp..it takes a 350hp gasaholic to produce the torque of a week diesel,they simply can't keep up on the hills or match the fuel mileage, I'll pay more for diesel while your paying more for premium gas. the diesel hardly has to work at getting down the road. if proper gears was all it takes to match the diesel dodge wouldn't be using cummins and ford wouldn't be pushing the IH. no one would be buying them. even when the gm pu's were properly geared at 4.10's and 235x85-16's the gm diesel without a turbo still pulled wth the 454 easily and nearly double the fuel mileage. one of my duallies had a warmed up 454 4.10's with 225's and got passed by my dad's 6.2 diesel on every hill we came up to, on family outings both geared the same,asside from his taller 235's, I used ot think the gas was the cat's meow, I have been proven wrong and went to the better choice in tow rig application.I sold the 454 engine and bought a 6.5 and then a banks sidewinder, now we have grunt and the darned old man can't pass me anymore.
BTW the blazer is turbo'd.

You are kinda missing the whole point here. Torque is being over played here. HP is torque x RPM divided by 5252. A 195 HP 6.5 makes about 145 HP at its torque peak of 1800 RPM but by its power peak of 3400 RPM is is only making about 50 more HP and about 140 ft lbs less torque too (less even a fairly mild 350 at that RPM) Diesel P/U's are generally geared better because of their limited RPM range while the mentality with most with gas motors is tall gear for lower RPM and better MPG but it does not work that way because most gas engines produce less torque and efficiency as RPM drops. Give me a nice stock Vortec 350 with stock tires, a 4.56 and I will pull anything as well as you do with a stock 6.5 and then some and walk away from you on high speed towing too as the 6.5 gets reved out and past its torque range and needs taller gears to keep RPM done but reduces effective torque in process. Sure I will use more fuel with a gas truck but truck costs a lot less too and diesel costs a lot more than gas here too. As far as 454 towing power verse a 6.5, do not even go there. Several years ago I had some friends that ran a circuit of doing weekend computer shows over a 500 mile or more radius at times. At first many though PS's, 6.5's and such were the way to go but they quickly found that when making the late nite "cannon ball" runs at 80 MPH and more with 10,12 and 14K enclosed trailers loaded with product that 454 powered trucks were walking away from them on high speed runs and MPG really stunk on the diesel when they tried to keep up with them towing at 80 plus speeds. (I knew a guy with a new 2000 Ford PS CC dualie 2x4 that was really upset that when he towed a 10K trailer at 80 MPH and more that he got 6 to 7 MPG and 454 guys were getting same MPG and leaving him behind too) A properly setup, feed and tuned 454 will wax a 6.5 towing badly. The reason that some 454's do poorly towing is because the CR is 7.9 to 1 on some of them and the timing curve is greatly retarded overall for emissions which does not help MPG either. Even today with higher CR's many that complain about towing performance and MPG towing yet use 87 octane fuel and cannot begin to understand the relation ship between engine octane needs for proper timing under load for best power and efficiency. All they know is if it start and runs on 87 they are "happy" and are in ignorant bliss as power and MPG is stolen from them. Modern knock sensors are good at this because they hear knock before you do and retard timing and quell it. The "problem" with this though is while a gas engine can "run" over a much wider timing range or deviation for optimum (while a diesel cannot) its peak power output and efficiency suffers greatly at times. I NEVER feed any vehicle with a CR of about 8.6 to 1 or more 87 octane. (feed it 89) and if it sees a heavy load (towing) with 8 to 1 or more it also gets feed 89 too. This is needed to be able to have a proper timing curve for best efficiency and power. But, like a said, many think one fuel does all and that 87 octane is the holy grail of fuels.

I might add that one of the finest gas tow motors ever made was old Dodge V10. It had a weakness though. It did not have a active knock control system so Dodge limited its CR and even lowered it on later models used in SUV's.(which also reduced efficiency and MPG rather than state a higher octane requirement) The result of this weakness was a tendency to burn valves. It was caused by low level fuel knock in engine that causes valve to vibrate in seats and leak with results in flame cutting over time and a burnt valve. The number one cause of burnt valves is low octane fuel.

I'm not missing anything here...and thats why, my friend, we use higher gear combo's for the diesels, where's all the v-10's now?
and where's all the 16ltr gasoline truck engines? mine is 475hp @2000rpm, it never gets run over 1700 cause the horsepower means squat for diesel pulling power..not to mention the higher rate of fuel consumption...I have 3.08 gears and 36"tall tires, the reason for only running upto 1700rpm is to stay in the torque range. same goes for a passsenger type diesel vehicle. so...if its not "properly geared" it will fall behind at high speeds..and will sail past on a hill.
it's ridiculous to suggest that 4.56 gear will allow a 350/454 to pull 10,000#s effieciently and in a timely manner up a hill, and run with a 6.5td...wait till a ford or cumins, d-max flys by...
other people have tried to out run and put pull diesels in legitimate as stock pulloffs and full blow competions with highly modified gas and diesel power plants pulling only 10#'s the gas power plants have never had any glory there...and the ones that come close go home on a trailer cause they aren't road worthy.

what would be cool,was that some one,somewhere would design an aerodynamic trailer,no a real one with some wasted space for the aero work in front,taking in a wind tunnel session or two and go and make a killing on an untapped market,it can be done,and yess 1 size wont fit all,but thats not the point,make use of whatcha got in the most efficient manner. 18 wheeler tlrs are begining to show some improvements,only because a small percentage of the population is interested,lets all be a part of a solution to the scoundrils who got us by the short and curlys.our economy is oil driven,so its gonna take the dump soon maybe..unless we push back with the grey matter.happy wheelin.

AND WHAT SUV DID DOG PUT A V10 IN? AND WHEN YOUR PULLING W/GAS THE RPM RANGE IS HIGHER THAN A DIESEL PULLING RPM RANGE THEREFORE YOU USE MOR GAS GETTING THE THING UP TO SPEED WHERE THE DIESELS IS LOW AND CAN GET THE LOAD UP TO SPEED ALOT BETTER AND FASTER!W/O WASTING FUEL. GRANT IT MY 93 K1500 W/V6 WILL TOW 3K POUND TRAILER OR A BOAT AND WILL ONLY GET 6-8 MPG WHERE IF YOU WERE TO PULL THE SAME W/DIESEL YOUD BE AT SAY 15-17 MPG...IT JUST TAKE MORE GAS TO MOVE SAME WEIGHT THAN A DIESEL AND TO MAINTAIN THE SPEEDS YOU WANT TO RUN...
BUT COME ON WHAT CRAZY PERSON TOWS ANYTHING AT OVER 80MPH?!? YOUR JUST ASKING FOR MORE TROUBLE AT THOSE SPEEDS TOWING!
