keithpapa:
I JUST READ OVER THE WEEKEND ABOUT 6.5L DIESEL SWAPS AND IS THE EASIEST TO DO IN ONE OF THE DIESEL MAGS I THINK IT WAS A MAR.OR APRIL '08 ISSUE AND THEY SAID THE COST OF THIS TYPE OF SWAP IS CHEAPER AND THE BEST WAY TO GO FOR LOW TORQUE AND MILAGE. BY FAR CHEAPER AND EASIER THAN FORD OR CUMMINS SWAPS AND IT SAID THE 6.5 WILL BOLT UP TO ANY GM BELL AND WILL FIT IN THE ENGINE BAY BECAUSE OF THE IDENTICLE SIZES OF 90DEGREE BLOCKS THAT PRETTY MUCH ALL GM ENGINES HAVE. I THINK THE WEIGHT MAY BE AROUND 2-300LBS HEAVIER THAN A 350 OR 360 OR 401 FOR THAT MATTER.
AND IT SAID THAT THE BEST PATIENTS FOR THE SWAPS ARE THE 60-70S CHEROKEE/WAGONEER-AND SEEIN HOW THE CJS CAME W/V8S IT WOULD WORK FOR THEM ALSO.
BEST DONOR RIGS WERE THE '84-98 GM 6.2/6.5 AND IF YOU DONT THAT MUCH ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS THEN GO W/THE OLDER 6.2 W/THE MECHANICAL INJ PUMPS, NOT MUCH PROBLEMS W/THEM.

I think it is more like 300 to 400 lbs and a old fullsize Cherokee or J P/U has more frame and axle under it too which you do not mention and they weight about 1200  to 1500 lbs more too. A 900 lb engine in a 3800 lb chassis with D44 minimum axles is not the same as one in a 2500 lbs chassis with D30's or so. You need to look at bigger picture. In a CJ, engine can be about 30% or more of total weight vs about 20% in a full sized. There is no free lunches here and off road ability will suffer. There is ego and reality as which is really best here. Ego does not get you through a mud hole but it sure can get you stuck in one with a heavy front end.

theres no ego involved with the 6.5td...
they they fling mud everywhere and plow through mud like its not there...

the wieght isn't much different that another passenger.
there is a point where you could say they are front end heavy but 300#s isn't there yet.. it would blow your mind what it'll go through and climb...It makes makes my 4.0 rubi look sick cause it get its rear kicked by a big ol' diesel powered cj especially in the mud amomg other things.

I REMEMBER ONE DAY I TOOK MY LIFTED SIERRA W/4" 35"MUD KINGS AND NO FRONT DRIVE SHAFT(IT WAS GETTING LONGER)AND WENT THROUGH A 3FT DEEP MUD HOLE ABOUT 25' LONG AND I KEPT THE RPMS UP AROUND 2K AND THE 6.2 POWERED THROUGH  THE MUD LIKE IT WAS WATER...NO PROBLEM GETTING STUCK.
SO I KNOW THE ADDED WEIGHT HAS NOTHING TO DO W/ANYTHING YOU JUST HAVE TO DRIVE A LITTLE MORE AGGRESSIVE KNOWING YOUR A LITTLE HEAVY...AND AS LONG AS YOU BEEF UP WHERE NEEDED (BOX THE FRAME IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND STRONGRER SHOCKS)  THEN THE ADDED WEIGHT TO THE CJ SHOULDNT BE A PROBLEM...AND IF EGO GETS YOU IN THE MUD (AND EGO GOT ME IN THE DEEP MUD,I GOT OUT)THAN YOULL HAVE THE TQ TO GET YOU THROUGH...
IT JUST SEEMS THAT SNOW HAS NEVER PLAY HARD W/6.2 DIESEL TO SEE WHAT THEY REALLY CAN DO,THEY ARE IMPRESSIVE.

The 6.2/6.5 is closer to 800 or a bit more PLUS, a heavier starter and dual batteries is a must too. When you compare the up grade over a in line six when it is all said and done it will be about 400lbs and about 500 lbs over a inline 4.  Nose heavy is not good but some seem to think otherwise but such a mod would likely wind up with a weight balance of around 65/35 (F/R) which is far from "cool".

dieselpower has the article (GM DIESEL ENGINE SWAP:PROJECT 6.5-PART 1-page 4 of tech) where they do a 6.5 swap and the weight they say is 700lbs
i think im going to do this swap just to see and prove to myself and others that want to do this swap w/out chasing their tales on specs and weight...its not an issue unless your gonna mud drag and want to go 0-100mph in 10secs. even now a days diesels are proving themselves as fast or faster than gas...so if the cj6 want a diesel get one and DO IT!

yeah...faster with half the rpm's..

us real jeep guys use dual batteries anyhow...and the gm 85 and up gear drive doesnt need duals to start the engine in normal conditions.....

take a  stock 4000# 4.0 wrangler vs. a 7000# gm diesel powered pu.....the wrangler can barely keep up..now loose the extra 3000#'s of the truck and put the 6.5 in the jeep...whos getting dusted now?

the weight balance ends up quite even when the rig has all the passengers, trail gear and tools in the back, to begin with It's not a problem anyhow.

the sand bag idea won't work...a few inches back or forward with the mounts make a big difference in wieght distrbution...on a truck fithwheel, moving one notch (which is about 3") moves 300-500#'s

what I dive is a giant rolling tetter-totter, both the weight on the drivers and the weight on the end of the trailer affect drasticly the amount that is transfered to the front steer axle...

the cj/YJ can be made even better....take a look at jeepnut4life's coil conversion...he moved the front axle 12" forward....that could make the distribution extremely manageable.

now who's yer papa?

This claim about diesel being faster than gas is VERY misleading. If America would loose it's affinity for low octane fuel, you can get high power output and a wide power band out of a gas motor with mild supercharging (mild meaning about 1/3 to 1/2 the boost they use on a old burner to make it run) that diesel boys can only dream about. Take a 8.1 with about 10 PSI with a intercooler and good fuel and you can get well over 500 HP and 700 ft lbs of torque and this torque is there the instant you step on gas and up to redline too.  You cannot get a oil burner to run without a turbo. (and the more you boost them the narrower the peak torque RPM band too) Without them they are slugs. If you want to fairly compared potential, compare a turbo diesel to a supercharged gas motor or a naturally aspired diesel to the same in gas. Do this and diesel trails badly. Least not forget that boosted diesel are very bad polluters even today (they are getting better but have a long way to go still in this regard) If gas engine had had the same lax requirements that oil burners had for years they would be different animals today. (I know because I was driving in pre-emission days) Diesel have long used turbo to dilute PPM emissions and hide true GPM (gram per mile) emissions and are very bad NOx generators (always have been, about equal to 10 gas SUV's) but nobody talks about that either. THey talk about new cleaner engines but they still have a long way to go to catch gas motors in GPM emissions.

my old blazer will definately run away from the 6.5 burb but not while towing...and the fuel mileage drops to single digits when trying to keep up..they still don't have the diesel torque charged.
