This is a unusual failure mode. Teardown or replacement is warranted here as it is not a good sign.

Yea that sounds alot like an internal part failure. I'd have a reputable shop R&R it.

yes it sound like it is internal BUT...my dad had an 82 sierra w/6.2 and the 700r4 and we were in the mountains on a ranch in montana and the tranny went out and had to pull ourselves out of the mountains by the frt axle...so i would also look at the 700.
he had it rebuilt but i cant remember what they said was the problem w/it other than the 6.2 ate the 700r4 like it was a bag of cheetos!

well i just found out what went wrong w the 700r4.
dad said that the planetary gears or (sun gears)ate each other up and the clutch packs were bad too...
so have that checked as well and good luck because it took 5 count em 5 700r4 rebuilds to get it right and i believe the last was done w/b&m guts to beef it up  and since then not a problem

If the tranny is out, it will be out in 2wd, 4wd or FWD. The T-case is AFTER tranny and a separate function.

i undersrand what your saying sno i questioned that myself, but upon teardown there was nothing wrong w/the t case on this particular situation, it was the original one through all the rebuilds.

The only plausible explanation here would be the Tcase linkage was damaged or out of adjustment when tranny failed because tranny has no bearing on its function other than passing power to it.
