what can you drive off the dealers lot not modify ,if any and go wheel? a H1, POWER WAGON? A UNIMOG WHATS YOUR TAKE???new or used using todays wheeling criteria, what could a production 4X4 do to set the pitter patter of your heart going? We have traction control some go 168 mph some lock up the axles solid, whatever what is the state of the art wheeler today?? And can some one loan some to the eds to brutaly test for posterity,or shall we say Bragging rights? Enough of all the commercialism, let the MFGS put up or go away and whimper.

Out of the three i kind of like the origional hummers. (im in the military) The h1 hummers are built like tanks, they will go almost anywhere (they are a little too wide and too heavy for some places) but they eat fuel like you wouldnt believe. the military style diesel hummers, come with a snorkel kit for water up to about 4' deep Ive seen those hummers take hits from mines and RPG's oil and steam spewing out of the hood, all 4 tires shredded and keep on going. Still a olive drab green hummer with a .50 cal machinegun on the roof looks frekin awsome, but i dont know where youre gonna get one like that. One bad thing about the hummers--dont get one with an alison hydro-static transmission, youre asking for trouble. I strongle prefer American made vehicles CHEVY ALL THE WAY, or maybe dodge...

IMHO the top 5 wheelable vehicles out of the box are the:
1. Jeep Wrangler JK 2. Hummer H3 Alpha 3. Hummer H1 Alpha (no longer available) 4. Dodge Power Wagon 5. Nissan X-terra

If you have the coin, a UniMog. It is big and heavy and larger than many need but it is truly built like a tank.

If you're talking about All-Time Bests:
1. Wrangler JK Rubicon 2. Wrangler JK Unlimited Rubicon 3. Wrangler TJ 4. Toyota FJ-40 Land Cruiser 5. Suzuki Samurai
If you're talking about newer-model rigs only, scratch the Cruiser and Suzi, and add the H3 ALpha and Land Rover LR3. My two cents.

Jeep rules, wonder what would happen if they made a 3/4 to 1 ton rated truck? wonder what it would do to the market? Probably scare the underpants off the industry! Wonder what the rest of the planet does with their four wheelers? and where they go and play, maybe a top truck challenge, uh Raid Europe? I think it would be increadibly AWSUM! if the unfortunate competitors got to come over and do a 100k race over here. maybe..?

Actually they did make them before Chrysler bought them out. They made a lot for military and some for sale too. I have a 79 J20 (3/4 ton) that I have owned for 22 years now. It is a no nonsense 4x4 truck and very sturdy. No frills but it is arguably the sturdiest and most trouble free 4x4 truck I have ever owned. The weak link it has in drive train it is the driveshafts. They used smaller Ujoints than they should of (blame Dodge for that because it was their parts back then for drive shafts)and it has gone through about 3 or 4 sets of Ujoints on front drive shaft and a few in rear in 108K miles. (they do not break, they just wear out early and vibrate) Several years ago I got a extra front drive shaft and I swap them out every year when I used it so I could properly check and lube it and have it ready to swap back in for next cycle. When I did that they seemed to last longer. (full time can be hard on front drive shafts) It pushed snow for many years and started life as a farm truck hauling grain trailers weighing up to 23K for many years for my in-laws. I bought it off them over 22 years ago and used it to haul horse trailers around for many more years and push snow too. The 4x4 drive system never failed and it never failed to start and run well either, Still has original AMC 360 and THM 400 with Qtrac full time 4x4 drive and still runs well. I retired it a few years ago and it is in barn until I restore it one day. Body is straight and complete and not rusted much either. I want to convert it to a stake bed truck when I restore it. It is a collection of Detroit parts from day one. GM tranny, steering, brakes and alternator, Ford carb and ignition and Dodge drive shafts, AMC motor, BorgWarner Tcase and Spicer/Dana drive axles. Frame is boxed up front and when I put a plow on it I did not even have to drill holes as it was already setup for it with holes and nuts welded in holes in frame that a Fisher hitch could bolt too. One winter we had a blizzard and for 3 days I was plowing people out on long lanes with over a ton of weight in bed and tire chains on all wheels.(it was a tank with those tire chains on it) I pushed it for all it was worth and then some through snow 2 to 3 foot deep in one pass. It was pushing and biting so hard in low range I was gritting my teeth some and I though for sure that something would break. It never did and never complained or lost its cool either. If I tried that with a modern truck I would be calling for a wrecker after a while.
