I have a 1988 Chevy S-10 Blazer 4x4 with the 4.3 V6 TBI and the TH700R4 transmission. the transmissions has stopped shifting and the oil smells burned. what could be the problem. we think the 3.08 gearing could be a factor and want to know what gears would be better.

without doubt is is a BIG factor. It is causing tranny to ride converter stall a lot and slow baking it. (especailly off road) What is the correct ratio depends on tire size and lift.

I gotta say a 4:10 would be my choice for a pavement pounder on 29" tires.
@65mph, 29" rubber and 4:10 gears the rpm will be close to 2150.........1950 with 3:73's, also acceptable depending on your driving environment.
now if the 700 has 1st and shifts into 2nd it probably toasted, if it has only 1st and reverse, the problem could be as simple as a stuck governor.

Not good. Could be a front pump failure. No pump, no pressure, no shifting of any kind. I would be looking for another tranny in a bone yard.

Better stuff some 4.56 or 4.88 gears under there too.

you think a 5" trailmaster suspension lift and a 1-2" body lift will make enough room for the tires

the 35's will be pushing your luck, but for a daily driver not taking a beating I'd have to say it'll be fine
