So, here's what I've got
94 xj, stock gearing(3.73 i believe), 33's, cf dualfriction clutch, only mod underhood is a KandN air filter. I'm wanting to get more power out my 4.0L, I'm on a pretty tight budget. Will a throttle body spacer give me enough power or should I just save and get the gears, and what gearing should i get? I wanna go FAST, its mainly a grocerygetter/weekend dune jumper. SHe struggles to get over 50 miles an hour , I'm kinda hurtin and any advice will be appreciated.

There is a very simple cure to this problem that many ignore. (though not real "simple" to do) RE GEAR the drive axles!!! Nothing else is going to fix it. It is no surprise that it struggles. You are off on gear ratio you have though. That model came with a 3.07 with a 5 speed which are kinda marginal with even stock tires and kinda worthless with big tires. Right now "if" you could do 65 in 5th, you would be turning 1600 RPM and that engine cannot make the HP needed to deal with that load (HP is torque x RPM divided by 5252) HP need increases as truck is lifted and RPM drops so less HP is available to do it UNLESS you regear. You want a 4.10 MINIMUM here as that will still only give 2100 RPM at 65 in 5th. To give you a better idea of the effect, 5th with 4.10's would turn about 60 RPM faster at 65 MPH than you XJ currently does in forth. SO if you are "happy" with current 4th gear performance as benchmark for 5th with gear change then get 4.10's. If you want a bit more, get 4.56's. If you play hard I would get 4.56's and you will never regret it.

horsepower is a poor substitute for gearing......the re gear would have nearly eliminated the need for the spendy clutch.

go with the 4:56's at least.

I missed the part about him replacing clutch. It is no wonder he did. With correct gearing the clutch would not be a issue and stock clutch would play fine. He has to really be taxing the clutch on the street with 3.07 gear with those tires and lift. (having to "play" it a lot) When you are having a clutch problem (it lasting or working) you need to be looking are your gears and usage and not a stronger clutch.
