hello............. Im a new member since now and have a 81 4x4 AMC Eagle with a 4.2 (258) . I noticed an article reguarding a Mopar Performance Jeep 4.2 Liter Multiport Fuel-Injection Kit. My question is, could it be used in this application ...? If so, what am I expecting to pay for this product and where can I obtain this product from.....? Thanks again, John

Things are not as they seem here. A engine of that era has low compression and a mild cam for emission reasons and installing FI on it will not make it run like a modern counter part. If you really want FI you would be money and power ahead of the game to swap in a more modern engine with FI on it already that has higher compression and different cam timing too and then adapt wiring and add a factory ECM to support it. Otherwise I would just stay with a carb on it.

I have a Comp Cam in the block and the heads have been redone. The Cam part# 68-201-4 witha gross valve lift on intake and exhaust are at .447 . Duration at .006 tappet left with intake and exhaust at 260. What do you recommend on the situation at hand.........? Thanks, John

I would suggest a after market intake with a small 2 bbl carb (around 390 CFM or a bi less) I believe I would have used a little less cam, (252 duration) as the engine size and CR of it will make it soft at lower PM and the 6 banger low RPM torque will be mostly gone. In the "old days" as you increased duration you also raised CR to to help offset the loss of pumping efficiency at lower RPM with valve overlap and to boost lower RPM response and torque. I would suggest that you try to get CR up to about 9.5 to one or better wit that cam and use 89 or better octane fuel and run about 12 to 14 degrees of initial advance with a full advance of 34 to 36 by 3800 RPM or so. A carb will play better here because of cam if you set it up right. If you want to have some "fun", convert it to propane fuel and raise CR to 12 to 1 or better and you will get some serious power out of that 6. (propane has a octane of well over 100 and loves high CR's) Do this and you will get MPG about equal to gas on cheaper fuel. (raising CR boosts efficiency and power) Plus, there is no fuel starve problems at odd angles, no vapor lock and no "flooding" hot or cold.

to answer your question... Mopar fuel injection kits run from $2200-2375 and come with everything needed. It is the same block and head on the eagle vs cj so you shouldn't have many issues other than find a place to mount the computer, the charcoal canister, and possibly some fuel lines. With the mods you have allready you can expect around 200hp at the flywheel. You can get an additional 30-40 (depending on blueprinting and porting.) if you add the 4.0 conversion head. I see them all day around $400 on ebay. I have done quite a few of these engines and the fuel injection is great. It is some serious money to be throwing at an eagle but it will be fast. I get 18-20mpg out of a cj with 31's and would expect an eagle to do much better

Can you link me to a site where the MPI is available for that price? The cheapest I have found it is around 2400

Put a Howell TBI on it. More than 1/2 the price and can be installed in a few hours. Plug and play.
