My buddy has an 80,s burban that cranks but wont start.Even with the diesle killing ether in 85 degree weather. he drained the old fluids, got a spray bottle to mist the fuel down the throttle body? we sprayed a little starting fluid ,no love. he says the glow plugs work.any ideas? i told him to mist a little tiny bit of gas into it ,but i think thats what he did first, hence the dilema. motor is round 100k old, Ithink its just bad juju.

starting fluid and gas are kinda a no no, use starting sparingly or wd-40 from the spray can not a squirt bottle. (just fyi I was in Prudohe Bay AK. and used Right Gaurd anti perspirant to get my 82 started after an overnight stop. in December of 92)
the red wire on the pump is the shutoff solonoid, it needs power, those solonoids do go bad, they won't start. the green wire is the fast idle solonoid. some even at 85 degrees won't fire up with bad glow plugs, unplug the wire, hook a test light ground to the tab and touch the test light to the + side of the battery, if the light comes on, its good, if not bad. It only takes a couple bad ones to cause hard starting. if you check them witout removing each wire they will all test good if there is one that actually is. I would go back to the glow plug test first, without them even the starting fluid is useless unless you do some serious cranking.

O how long does the glow plug light stay on when the key is first turned on? the relay could also be the culprit. especially if it is older than 85,
take a piece of wire or plier handles and short the positive posts to give the plugs power for about 15 quick seconds, If it has older glow plugs they won't last long using this method.

mudb8 gave great information. Another possibility is if this was a running vehical just prior to this no start problem is if you introduced air into the fuel system such as changing fuel filter (and not filling it), or draining it, air will get trapped in the fuel system and it does not self bleed and will not run. In the case I just mentioned it would run for a short time until the air made its way to the injectors, and then quit. There are other possibilities. Diesels really need a good fuel spray coming out of the injectors and good working glow plugs to start. My 82 1 ton has the 6.2, so does my 82 Blazer, and I have a 86 1/2 ton with the 6.2 also.

the 83's and over have a couple different cartridge type filters that are a pain to fill up and sometimes are hard to get sealed. I genneraly fill them with ATF when changing them, sometimes twice before the start back up and stay running. thats where an electric fuel pump is handy.
sounds like we have a similar fleet. I froze my rear off this morning in st. Paul unloading, even had to sit in the truck a few till I could feel my fingers again before I got done.

I actually added a longer hose and 3/8" ID outboard primer bulb between the primary fuel filter and the hard line to the fuel pump to speed up priming when needed.
LOL, Yeah, it has been cold this month in Minnesota. I am north of there about a couple hundred miles.

didn't think of it the other day , check out http://thedieselpage.com/ and http://sixfiveturbodiesel.com/they are both member sites although you can browse most of the articles. the 6.5 is nearly the same animal. the diesle page started around 82 so there is 6.2 specific info.
