I would have to agree with chopper, a Jeep would be a good choice.  I am a full size GM truck guy, but a Jeep would most likely be your best choice.  You can get parts for them anywhere, and every type of modification is available for them.
Good luck.

I would place pre Wrangler models as best for this before they switched from four corner leafs around 94 to Wrangler front end design when they widened and lowered it too. (made it heavier as well)

i agree with snoman, i had a 76 cj and it was cheaper for parts and much less complex to work on. just something to think about.

Thanks guys..for the suggestions you have given to me...but What's about safety?  My friends told me that Jeeps require a lot of knowledge and understanding of their limitations as well as their abilities on and off the road to have a safe and stable driving experience.

No, Jeeps simply are not commuter cars and if you drive them as a utlity vehicle and respect its center of gravity in sudden maneuvers you will not have any problems. Drive it like a sedan and you will have problems.

yeah they just dont make vehicles for the general public that require special driving skills to operate unless you push them past their designed limits. drive like a sane person and you'll be fine on, and off road.

The worst thing that ever happen to Jeep was trying to commuterize it. Some think Jeeps are better than ever but they are fatter, heavier, lower to ground and mushier in ride too. Maybe I am old fashioned but I remember when Jeeps were lean mean machines for off road usage even stock.

Sit in a few different models and see which one feels right to you, if your comfortable in a vehicle you will like it much better and be confident in its usage and enjoy it more, Good luck to you

This is pretty much true but Jeep was kinda a icon and niche vehicle of 4x4 industry that was destroyed in the name of profit and greed. It really went down hill after Chrysler seized control of it. At least AMC keep the Jeep more Jeep while they had it.

i like the dodge durango also. it's big enough but not too big, nice ground clearence stock, and a decent line-up of drive trains.
