Do you have side band? a power mike, a tuned antenna? hmm maybe you cant get the signal out past a couple of miles cause you havent optimized what you got,you did get the good cable didnt ya? can you pick up skip, uhh a transmission from another country? Is your antenna a 108 inches long,is your antenna on a good ground plane, do you know how the radiation patterns are position dependant. Did you know that only the most ignorant newbee naff cusses on the radio? do you know how to tune that 60 dollar antenna to get the best reception?

what's this about?

power mics belong in the box they came in, a good astatic 636 or turner RK56 is the best/highest quality mobile you can get, the antenna is the biggest problem of all, especially duals, they need to be 8' apart and individually tuned to match, they may look cool but they are directional, using a 9' coax wire won't work well either if you want to get out over a 1/4 mile.

I run a connex 4800 with a rk56, 18' coax, wilson 5000 (only because my radio is a 12 band am/fm sideband) antenna, 250 killer bee, I can get out and recieve over 30 miles in a mediun traffic area, in at times I can talk to the base station at home from over 2,500 miles away. (skip), usually a 60 antenna can be outperformed by a 15$ francis 5 1/5ft whip. with no tuning needed.

I agree on the power mike ,francis rules on the no frills work everyday antenna front, had a wilson w/ the tunable tip work very well, with my 99,nd 148 couldnt find anyone on fm though with a wide band ant ,so switched back to wilson. In PA i got to talk between Canada and Florida one time at a *** down on the island picked up mexico pretty well, they were having a bingo game! my 2970 blew the finals continously so i gave it away, think the galaxy 99 the best radio ever though. A single antenna looked funny but it gave me an extra 2 miles on my cornbinder. think all 4 wheelers should have one . great during hurricanes down here!

yeah, the 99 is the same internally as the 148, just has more options outside the box, just put the other antenna up there for looks, don't mean you have to use it!

18' single phase coax and a 5.5ft francis whip, the 8fter is great also but they wipe out drive thru lights and tend to hit on everthing, tied down they don't work well so.....the 5.5 is the best choice and no nonsense dang that sounds like a panty hose commercial,LOL stay away fromn the adjustables like the k-40's and firesticks..ect. unless you know what your doing and like to mess with them all the time.

the side switch could be funny's one band above and below the citizen band on the am. who knows theres lots of tinker's.

a franchise truckstop is usually the best place unless there is a cb shop nearby, ta, flying j, petro, pilot, loves to name a few...

Heya, yea i like to tinker with the signal stuff, i had way better service life out of a 148 than any other radio.off roadin an 80k wagon sure tears things up. the k40,wilson type ants are great on a car,but trees take a toll quickly, when the mirrors are got aholt of.i used to love to drop up an down on the side band to see who i could find . I love the symetry of duals but like that i could xmit and rcv better through a single, wanted to look into the cobra 200,but i figured to let the new bugs get worked out first. managment didnt like that i was killing the fixtures w/ my 8 footer. SWR's were the best though.

your best bet is to go to a major truck stop to purchase a cb. some of the bigger truck stops have cb shops, where you can pick up a good used radio for cheap, or you might be able to get one from a driver for like $20 or so.....sometimes they just need some cash to eat or buy some smokes.
