I'm still trying to find out more info about SAS on a 2000 silverado 1500. Do you know of anyone who has done this? What would be the biggest downfall to a SAS on this year/model pickup? What are the differences in frames(size, shape, ect.)that make it not plausible for manufacturers to build SAS kits for my model/year pickup? Do you have any suggestions that could make this swap easier/better? What kind of steering issues will there be and how is it done on other kits? Any info would be excellent! Thank you

As I have mentioned before, it is something about that chassis. GM did not have a HD P/U truck chassis until 2001. They carrier over OBS (old body style) HD models for 2000. With each revision, GM has lightened up the chassis on its 1500 models to make them more car than truck. This was not a issue even with 1500 OBS truck but it is with 99 and 2000 Silverados. Realistically, if you want to get serious with a build on a NBS truck, you should be using a 2500HD anyway. It is not like the old days when 1500 and 2500 trucks shared same basic chassis/frame thru 87. You cannot even install a stronger 9.25 front axle out of a 2500 or 3500 into a 1500 either. There is not much meat in that frame on that truck. Sorry to be the grim reaper on this.

That doesn't really answer any of my questions. What is so amazing about the IFS that beefs up the frame? Why wouldn't a solid axle be just as strong if not stronger? You say you should us a 2500HD, ok makes sense but there's not many people in this world that can go drop 15 or 20 grand on a project truck to start with.

I did not realize any one does not offer a SAS kit for that particular truck. I do recall around that time contractors around here buying new 1/2 ton Chevys and Fords, loading the bed with wood hanging way out the back like they have done on past trucks and the frame bent upward between the cab and box. The frames were made overseas (and I beleive they still are) and shipped over, both for Chevy and Ford. The steel is soft; you can put a wrench on the c-channel frame and bend it, not very easy on an older truck. They went to full boxed frames because they had to.

It is not the IFS beefs up the frame it is that the frame has been weakened on that model truck and its IFS was designed to deal with that. The frame lacks the strength needed to properly support weight on the front of it by bumper were foward shackles attach for leafs and rear too with a solid and it may lack strength for even a coil over. As I stated earlier, GM carried over th old body style into 2000 for HD apps because the 99 and 2000 model Silverados lacked the strength in chassis to do so. People need to understand that a modern 1/2 ton is not like days of old. They are weaker built and more of a truck body on a car frame than truck. It is not like older truck that shared same basic frame. GM's newest 1500 (07 and later) has lightened the frame even more and in the rear it looks like it belongs on a lawnmower. Yes they boxed it but they had to because it is so thin and small and I can see rear frame failure on these model when some rust sets in and weakens what little metal there is there. It is hard to beat a good old thick sturdy C channel frame bad there for strength and long term durability. This is why I mention a 2500HD in that body style because even the 08's have not had that taken away. (yet anyway)
