Reference 'Safety chains' in 'letters' in the 11-07 issue, I run some vehicles and mostly farm tractors from easter long island to florida and back on trailers.

I'm an experienced, retired, non-commercial driver pulling my own stuff-mostly antique tractors to tractor pulls. I use stamped chain fore and aft attached to stake pockets or a chain rail depending on which trailer I use. To prevent bounce, I generally use a two inch wide rated ratchet tie strap with either chain ends to prevent chaffing or flat hooks with old fire hose to prevent chaffing on the ends where the staps touch the end of the trailer.

I generaly use lever chain binders and secure the lever to the chain with long cable ties that go around two or three times from the lever to the chain to prevent lifting- and then wrap any extra chain around the area. I go 'by the book' and not often enough to appear commercial, and with my own wholly owned iron.

My horse is a 99 ford F-350, 7.3 liter Banks diesel, 6-speed stick, extended cab, short bed, four wheel drive. I don;t trust a winch to stay secured for distance,I trust chain.
Keep the shiny side up
