this may seem stupid, but i need someone to guess which axel are in my truck. it is a 1996 ram 1500 4x4 stock. the reason i dont know is because i am over seas and the truck is in the states. i am returning in a few weeks and want to start prepping for building it and i obviously cant look at them right now.

It "should" have a 9.25 in rear and a D44 up front.

Hi. I have a Dodge Durango year 2000 4x4. The rear axle is 9.25 (diamond shape). I'm having, what it looks like, a bearing problems but i'm not sure where its coming from. i've hoisted the truck and put it in Drive and in 4x4 and used a Machanics sthetoscope to hear the noise. The problem is that i've heard noises in all bearings (rear wheels brg, pinion brg, transmission brg, and in the front axle i've heard the same noises. When i'm driving it, and turn a wide righ, the noise lower a little bit. also, the rear axle, when i was trying to remove in order to inspect, the pinion shaft bolt broken half in. just the other half came out. what would be the best choice, fix this rear end or get another one and overhaul it and swap?
Thanks

The Ram 1500 came from the factory with a D44 front and Chrysler 9.25" rear. So unless someone did a swap for you, that's what you have.

Luiz666, I'd pull the existing axle apart and rebuild it. You'll likely be ahead as far as cash outlay goes.

Axle noise are hard to pin point because the housing conducts the noise really well. Recent 9.25 Chrysler rear axles though have a bit of a track record of having pinion bearing problems. I am going to guess that there has been issues with factory preload of them when they were built because it is not rare. Said part is is that the 9.25 used to be considered to be a pretty fair axle. I would get 9it rebuilt and pay close attention to pinion bearing preload and do change axle lube often, about every 15K and do not just forget about it.
