i have a 89 1ton with a 454 automatic and i am prepairing to put a lift kit and a solid front axel swap. the engine was recently freshed up but other wise bone stock i want to get as much power out of it as i can with out messing with the innderds of the engine i am planning on installing headers, underdrive pullys, dual exhaust, gen II jet power programer, throttle body spacer, cold air intake, and a shift kit for the tranny. i was wondering if any one had any suggestions or ideas on how to get more power out of it without getting internal the most i would do internaly if i have to is a cam kit and double roller timing chain and advance it a couple degrease

First forget the under drive pulleys, the gain is not worth bother with a stock 454's rev range and it will compromise cooling too which you do not want to do. Serious power gains can be made with a after market intake and a bigger TBI unit as both of the stock units are pretty restrictive. Further more advance base line timing about 6 to 8 degrees and run at least 89 octane as stock timing is VERY conservative to tolerate 87 octane fuel. Example, my son has a old beat up 89 Firebird with a 305 that is a bit of a slug at times and sucked gas. I got him to change timing for stock TDC to 10 BTDC and use better gas and he was amazed how much better it ran and MPG improved a lot too and more than offset extra cost of fuel. Many kinda tie their hands by sticking to 87 octane on V8's, especailly big ones. Also I am not too fond of shift kits because in reality they add stress and strain to tranny and not reduce it. In a big heavy truck, the THM 400 is best left stock except for maybe a aux tranny cooler. Also if you really want to wake it up, you need to get some better heads for it and a cam as stock heads that year do not flow well either and a compression bump would be in order too.
