hi i am looking to maybe buy a diesel excursion or f250. i am thinking about the 6.0 liter. what is your experience with this engine? is a truck with 50k-70k miles should be a reliable one? i am planning to use it every day. and in th weekend. it will be lifted of course to clear 37". how is the procomp conversion? i want it with coil springs instead of leaf spring in the front. would love to hear from you all.

The 6.0 PS has not been Fords best engine by any stretch. SOme do okay with them and some do not. The biggest problem with them seems to be injector problems that leak fuel into crankcase and dilute engine oil and is many cases cause engine failure if undetected.I would buy a 6.0 PS with caution. On more tip if you buy it and lift it do not depend on boosting it more to power the 37's with stock gear ratios in axles as you may wind up cooking your tranny even if engine holds up okay with extra boost. The 7.3 while not as powerful stock was a very sturdy engine with a good track record. The 6.0 overall cannot boast the same.

I have to agree with snoman the 6.0's have a very bad track record depending on what year you get here is a list of problems to expect. The turbos are notorious for going out on the them as well as blowing head gaskets. The EGR valves also are a common problem area. I haven't heard as much about injector problems. The biggest ones are the turbos and headgaskets. Some of them have had some transmission problems as well when they first went to the torqshifts. My 7.3L which is what I would suggest will tow anything you put behind. They are a great all around truck very few problems and when they do get older are fairly cheap to rebuild. My 7.3L has a 100hp hypertech III which is a great programmer for them as you can turn it to 40,60,100hp settings 60 is recommended for towing. I also have a 4" turbo back exhaust from MBRP and the brute force intake from AEM. I get anywhere from 17-18.5 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. That is cruising along running 70 mph, 1,800 rpm's with 3.73 gears and 35" tires. I have been know to get up to 27 mpg though. If you plan on towing I would recommend a 4" lift with 35's it will still give the look and the clearance you are looking for believe me and it will make a ton of difference with the way your truck handles with a load that way you aren't looking to the sky like my cousin does with his 6" lift to clear the 37's he has oh and by the way his is also a 6.0L and he has had all of the above listed problems except the turbo so far. I recommend you look at superlift they make an excellent lift for superduty's and I don't know anyone out of the 7-8 us that run them and haul with them that has had a problem due to the lift kit yet!

guys, thank you very much for the answers. the reason i was looking on procomp was that they swap the leaf springs with coil in the front.. i will check the 7.3 although they will have probebly more miles on them... thank you very much for the advices. i am not new in the off roading but it will be the first off road i am going to buy in the US. ( i did not grew up in the US.)

Well maintained a 7.3 will run a very long time and 200K is not a big deal for them if properly cared for.

i have heard from numerous sources that the 6.0L is not nearly as reliable as the 7.3, and personally if you will be using it that much i would recommend a truck with less miles

I still reccomend the 7.3L because they are cheap to rebuild, and are so reliable of a motor. Snoman is correct in the assessment of the longevity of the motors. It is not uncommon for them to get 200K or more as long as they are properly maintained.

I have a 2004 F-250 Super Duty 4x4. I love the truck, however there have been a lot of problems with the truck since about 64,000 miles. I had a few since 34,000, EGR problems, IPR went out was dumping oil 1 1/2 qt a day. I was in Mississippi for Katrina and had to wait two wks, and 30 qts, till I could get back to GA. Then 64,000 HIT. Injectors, some fuel/water seperator problem, catalitic converter broke in half at a welded seam at 76,000 Ford said it was not covered under warranty, about $950.00. Then more injector problems, so far all but #8 has been replaced. I think I am at 14 injectors right now, 96,000 right now. Still love the truck, hate the engine problems.

ive got an 04 350 with the 6.0 and at just 20,000 miles had small overheating problem and turbo problems, took it to the dealear everything was covered under warrenty, no problems so far. A well maintatned one should be fine just make sure that if you boost power or chip it you wacth your egts cuz you motot will burn up quicker than a tranny trying to pull 38 inc tires with 3.07 gears
solid axle chevys cant be beat
