Are you talking about which one might fit in a 1970 Blazer or Jimmy?

Not sure I have ever seen a diesel Jimmy.
A 6.5 would probably be your best bet for an 'easy' swap.
And sure you can make it a 1 ton. Axles, trans, engine, you basicly have a 1 ton.

I have seen s few 6.2 ones in 80's models but never any 6.5's in 90's models (that does not mean they were not made) My only concern with the fit is that GM changed the frame in front engine bay by notching out rails to clear emissions manifolds. I and not sure if the notching is needed to clear 6.2. Also a 6.2 would be the easiest swap as it had few if any electronic controls on it.

I have a buddy with a 80's blazer with a 6.2 diesel that would probably be the easiest to swap in since it has the fewest electronics on it. I myself would probably throw in a 350 or 327 cause gm wasn't exactly known for there diesels prior to the dmax they are gutless wonders. I am not a fan of the 6.2 6.5 or 6.5 turbo but I love the new dmax.

I almost bought a truck with a 6.5 when I got my 2000 (I would have seriously considered it if I could have found one new then) Actually I kinda liked the 6.5 more than Dmax for my needs. It was lighter, smaller and far less cluttered in engine compartment and when driving them they were free reving for a diesel and "fun" to drive. Dmax has more power but never felt as free reving as 6.5 did (or even 6.2). One more thing, in 2000 a 6.5 was about a 2200 dollar option verse the approx 5000 dollar option Dmax was in 01 and around 7K today. In my book this is too much to pay for a engine option in a P/U plus with diesel fuel higher today and tomorrow, it will never pay for itself.

I really woulndt consider a deseil swap in a blazer or jimmy, your not going to gain anything except for a few mpg, but seriously the desiel engines of chevy of that era 70s-90s really sucked! not that they werent reliable but they are gutless, no power, no cool factor, the only desiel i wuold consider would be a late 90m 6.5 turbo desil but thats it all the older ones sucked!! If you are looking for a good fuel efficent motor consider swapping a 99 and up vortec 5.3 (327) motor with fuel injection, itll cost more and be more complicated but when you get it running you will never regret it, itll have power, run clean and smooth and best of all there are plenty of hop up parts.
solid axle chevys cant be beat

When I worked for the government in R&D we had some Chev 1 ton stake bed trucks with 6.2's in them and they ran well. They performed far better than their HP rating suggested. Not sure what axle ratio they had (maybe a 4.56) but they were quite peppy empty or loaded.

i don't know... a 12 valve cummins is a pretty simple setup... not a lot of electronics... and you've got enough space up there to make it fit... you're best bet is to find a complete donor vehicle... no good body or anything...Advanced adapters probably makes an adapter to fit any tranny you would like... though if you find a 2wd version with an NV4500 you can put in a divorse transfer case and set it up anyway you would like...

My biggest beef with CTD swap is weight. It alone weighs about 1100 lbs or almost twice as much as a SB and adding a lot of weight up front is not a asset off road. Then the is the height of motor too. A 6.2 or 6.5 makes a lot more sense because they weigh less and are more compact and fit far easier too.
